UPC BARCODES - WHICH SOURCE IS BEST?

Anyone have comment or experience about difference between the GS1 barcodes ($750 to join and $150 each year to lease a code, at a minimum)?
And the myriad, it seems, other suppliers at substantially lower fees to own?
