Food Entrepreneurs

THE "GO TO" PLACE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN SPECIALTY FOOD MARKETING.

I am in the process of starting my own specialty food business manufacturing and selling healthy treats with high levels of antioxidants. My recipes are "homemade" and could use the expertise of a food chemist or scientist. I live in Maryland - does anyone have any recommendations for a good, reputable food chemist or scientist? Thank you.

Karen,
Assuming you are an entrepreneur and need to do this on a tight budget, I suggest:
- your best, close university with a strong food science program. In your case, University of Maryland is a good place to start. Strong unversity food science programs often have good internal resources.
- As them if your state has a food incubator. Often states have a shared facility with kitchens for startups
- The important trade association for good food scientists is the IFT (Institute of Food Technologists). You can find a member near you

Feel free to contact me, if you don't have what you want via these avenues.

Hi Karen:

I'm not sure how reputable I am but I am the type of Food Scientist that you seek. I would be happy to chat on the phone with you about how I might be able to help. Please feel free to call or email me.

Hello Paul,
Happy New Year and thank you for responding to my inquiry. I have been away; thus, my late response. I appreciate very much your comments. I do have someone helping me with my recipes - not a food chemist but lots of commercial experience with large well-know companies. I am not sure if there is more that an actual chemist could provide. My plan is to give this another few weeks and if I don't receive the results I am looking for, I will then go the food chemist route.

Thank you again, Karen

Go to the Institute of Food Technologist. Find the local chapter and ask them. Also, check with the Food Science department of the nearest university to answer your microbiology/food safety questions.
