THE "GO TO" PLACE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN SPECIALTY FOOD MARKETING.

I would like to start trying to market my salad/dressing recipe. But, I have no idea where I could even get started. Where can I start? What should I do? I just started this processing and I was hoping someone could guide me.

Hello Gul,

The 5th edition of "From Kitchen to Market" is being published today under a new title: "Sell Your Specialty Food."

Ask your library for a copy. If you like it, you can return to this site, or Amazon, and order your copy.

Once you have perused the book, get back to me with any specific questions. I, and many on this site, will be happy to answer.

Best wishes for great profits!

Hey me too, but it's not a salad recipe. It's an old family recipe and there is not another one out there. And I to have no idea where to begin, especially on protecting the recipe is where i'd like to start. Have you learned anything?

I found an article written about Trademarking recipes.

It is insightful but there's no substitute for professional advice when discussing legal matters.

This would be important to me too as my family and I are compiling our legacy recipes for the eventual cook / recipe book.

One place to begin since you link in Washington state is the Washington Department of Agriculture. They can give you some direction about how to start and what needs to be in place. Here is the link: http://agr.wa.gov/FoodAnimal/FoodProcessors/

1. Select your product
2. Test recipes
3. Have a public sampling of none friends and family
4. Assess findings and responses from the public
5. If needed return to the kitchen for recipe adjustments
6. Design a product sample, complete with packaging, label and retest in the market place.

This should get you started.
