THE "GO TO" PLACE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN SPECIALTY FOOD MARKETING.

I'm writing this as much to ask a question as to spout an opinion.

I'm ready to be proven wrong.

All the specialty food lists I'm on are emailing their Father's Day specials--regardless of whether it's the right target audience or not.

In fact I'm betting that most of them hope their list is mostly made up of daughters and wives.

Maybe they're right. I don't know who's on their list, do I?

One clever company, however, seems to have thought about this too. They've carefully selected items known to appeal to men--and encouraged fathers to drop hints about $10 off the such & such. I thought it would've been even cooler to have something Dad could print out--like a wish list to hand over to the wife & kids.

Then there's the question of a well-matched gift. Buying Dad 10 lbs of steak--I definitely get. Kick-butt hot salsa I get too. Ordering him a fruit basket, however, I'm not so sure about. A nice idea...but who is really going to be eating those pears & kiwis?

All of this raises the question--do specialty food companies see a spike in sales from their Father's Day offers? Or is it something you do because everybody else is doing it?

And...is it worth it to fine tune the offer? Perhaps make it more relevant & compelling. Maybe not. Maybe it's just another day--another offer.

What do you think?
